Five tips for getting the most out of short-term business housing

When you first begin traveling on business it is exciting and gives you a feeling of exclusivity and status. Clock up a few thousand miles and that allure quickly begins wearing off. Endless lines at the airport, dozens of anonymous hotel rooms, endless meetings, more queues and more cramped airplane seats.

It doesn’t have to be that way. We can take care of the hotel room issue by delivering luxurious furnished apartments that cost much less and deliver much more. The rest is just a matter of mindset and technique. Both things our experienced team of travelers can also help with. Here are our five top tips for getting the most out of business travel.

Appearance is not everything

Working in business, we are used to be judged on what we wear and how we wear it. Traveling is the opposite. It should be all about comfort. Forget wearing a suit for the flight and definitely don’t wear a tie. It won’t get you an upgrade and you won’t get better service.

I spent years flying in track pants and a hoodie with my suit in its carrier. I was much more comfortable, could sleep better and arrived at my destination with my suit uncreased and having had quite the restful flight.

Do your research

Longer business trips can include a lot of boredom and listlessness as you have time to kill and have no idea what’s going on around you. Many of our corporate rentals are in downtown locations or business districts which means you are usually only a short walk from city highlights, venues, attractions and things to see and do. Research your destination before you leave and create a list of activities you might like to try. The more you do before you go, the less time you will waste sitting around wondering what to do.

Keep moving

If you’re away for a few weeks at a time, you need to keep healthy and exercise in order to maintain your health. Pack a pair of sneakers and workout gear and use it. Even if you jog around the block or use the gym within the development or building. A healthy body leads to a healthy mind. Make sure to eat properly and drink lots of water too. It will pay dividends in the long run.

Take the family if you can

Our corporate apartments are spacious, well-appointed and fully equipped. You can happily stay there alone but why do that if you don’t need to? Bring your partner or bring the family. It isn’t always an option to fly away for a few weeks if you have work commitments or school, but if you don’t, making it a family affair can make all the difference.

You get the morale boost of having your family with you while you work away from home and your family gets to experience a new city and new way of life for a while.

Travel with an open mind

One thing all our travel team agree on is that it is too easy to slip into a routine. Pack, fly, land, go to your accommodation, go to work, come back, work out, eat dinner, bed, rinse and repeat. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. Sure, some days are going to be like that but they shouldn’t all be.

Travel with an open mind, explore the city, get out and about, try new things, eat in new places, meet new people and be open to experiencing new things. It will make your business trip go much faster and be much more satisfying if you do more than just work and sleep.

Between us, our team has clocked up hundreds of thousands of air miles for work. If you’re doing the same, these five simple tips could make a real difference to your experience. Try them and see what a difference they make!
